Giving Back: EmpowHER (OutRight)
One of our first roadmap items includes a donation to a nonprofit organization. At 20% of our collection sold out, we will be donating 5% of the proceeds we’ve generated from primary sales to an organization that we feel really fits with our mission. Our mission here at Women Tribe is to help women and all people embrace their inner divinity and power. So, we actively explored organizations that we felt aligned with this long-term vision.
We also knew that many times, charitable donations are viewed as a “tick the box” to-do item. We want to be different, to be better. We explicitly looked for and spoke with organizations where we could truly partner with the organization in order to drive ongoing change within the NFT community and the world.
With that in mind, we’re excited to announce partnering with OutRight International to support their new program EmpowHER. OutRight was founded over 30 years ago to advocate for and ensure LGBTIQ human rights around the world. They are the only global LGBTIQ organization with consultative status and a permanent presence at the United Nations Headquarters, where they advocate for equality and serve as a watchdog on world governments. Outright also publishes groundbreaking research and provides technical assistance, training and funding to grassroots LGBTIQ organizations, including more than $3M to 300+ groups in 100+ countries through its COVID Emergency Fund.
The journey for full LGBTIQ rights and equality has a long road ahead globally. In 67 countries around the world, homosexuality is still criminalized, and punishable by death in some. Only 6 countries in the world have banned “conversion therapy,” and in 30 countries, there is not a single LGBTIQ organization to advocate for the LGBTIQ community and basic rights.
Throughout its history OutRight has proudly identified as a feminist organization and actively worked to advance women’s rights. The EmpowHER program is a new program OutRight is launching this year that will be focused on empowering LBQ women into leadership roles and promoting their human rights within the LGBTIQ movement and public policy. This program is important because queer women face intersecting forms of discrimination and oppression and are targeted and marginalized even within the LGBTIQ movement.
EmpowHER will include a mentorship program for 100 LBQ women from the Global South and East who will be paired with 100 established LBQ women leaders. The mentees will receive hands-on training for leadership training and skills in key areas for activism. The program will also strengthen LBQ advocacy measures around the world, focusing on feminist and human rights-based laws, and increase the visibility of LBQ women activists and leaders.
At Women Tribe, we’re excited to give back to an organization that is so well aligned with our mission. We’ll be working closely with the OutRight team to establish ongoing ways we can partner together beyond our initial donation and Twitter Spaces events.
We’d like to extend a special thank you to Katie Hultquist, the Director of Leadership Giving at OutRight, for all she is already doing to promote women’s empowerment and LGBTIQ empowerment within the NFT industry.
